Hope Sounds Like

Hope sounds like a toddler's laugh,

Where the simplest circumstance

Can bring forth joy unbounded and unbridled,

Free of any expectations or shame,

Reveling in the infinite now of pure self.

Hope sounds like a sigh of relief,

Exhaling not merely spent breath

But the pent-up energy of anticipation,

Allowing ourselves to believe again

In a future that moments ago felt beyond our reach.

Hope sounds like silence;

The calm before the storm,

The eye of the hurricane,

The dramatic fermata rest before the resolution,

Even if that resolution never comes.

Hope sounds like a heart beating.

Hope sounds like a heart breaking.

Hope sounds like a cacophony of chaotic noise.

Hope sounds like a still, small voice.

Hope sounds like something so faint as to barely be heard,

And hope sounds like a trumpet blast;

Bugles heralding the calvary's last charge.

Hope sounds like everything and nothing at all.
