Blessings and Religion
Blessed are the meek, the weak and downtrodden wrecks.
Blessed are the ones with the boots of the powerful on their necks.
Blessed are the ones with the boots of the powerful on their necks.
Blessed are the beggars, the broken and kicked down.
Blessed are the ones who wear the thorny crown
Of mockery, abuse, hatred, and spite.
Blessed are the ones who long to see the world set right.
Blessed are the ones who cry themselves to sleep.
Blessed are those stuck climbing a path that's far too steep
Hoping that the summit might hold a better life.
Blessed are the mentally ill embroiled in eternal strife.
Blessed are the grief stricken who can barely lift their heads.
Blessed are the ones who think they'd be better off dead.
Religion can heap its blessings on those already blessed.
Seeking worldly things, kissing rings, wearing their Sunday best.
But Jesus? He loves the ones religion can't abide.
Casting out our bigotry he welcomes them inside
Clothing them in dignity, he gives them an honored seat:
While the Pharisees rant and rave, Jesus washes feet.
